What is Blue Chalcedony?

Chalcedony is a variety of quartz, just like amethyst or rose quartz. The difference is chalcedony is a microcrystalline, meaning its crystals are too small to be distinguished without magnification, whereas quartzes like Amethyst and rose quartz are a macrocrystalline, their crystal structures are large enough to be viewed without magnification.

Blue chalcedony is found in a wide range of blue shades with some having hues of grey or green. It can also be found in shades of purple and pink, known as ‘pink chalcedony’ or ‘purple chalcedony’. Chalcedony can also be named after the mine it is found.

Where is Blue Chalcedony From?

 It was first found in the ancient Greek maritime town of Chalcedon and is thought to have been used in the ancient civilisations of Greece, Egypt and Rome in rituals and ceremonies. It is now found across the globe with some of the largest known deposits found in Turkey, Brazil and India.

Blue chalcedony is known as ‘The Speaker’s Stone’ as it is thought to ease self-doubt and improve communication. It is also often referred to as a protection stone as it is thought to absorb negative energy and disperse the energy so that it cannot spread further. Other potential attributes of blue chalcedony include emotional healing, promotion of joy and serenity as well as harmonising of emotions and spirit.  

 How to care for blue chalcedony

 Chalcedony is a variety of quartz, different to other crystals such as amethyst or rose quartz because of its microcrystalline structure, which means it’s crystals are not big enough to be distinguished without the use of magnification. It is a fairly soft stone, meaning it should be stored and worn with care to avoid scratching the stone. It is best to Keep it in a separate pouch away from other jewellery to avoid scratching. To clean your chalcedony, wipe the stone with a soft cotton cloth to remove surface oil and dirt. A damp cloth can be used for a deeper clean before buffing with a soft cloth. Ensure the stone is dry before storing. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are not appropriate for chalcedony and are likely to damage the stone. Chalcedony should not be subjected to prolonged periods in bright sunlight as this can lead to fading.
